Former Kilgraston School building and grounds put on the market

Former Kilgraston School building and grounds have been listed for sale after the closure of the school in August 2024. The closure came about due to financial shortfalls caused by an investor backing out of a funding deal. The prestigious independent school, Kilgraston, located in Bridge of Earn, had been in operation since the 1930s but had to shut its doors just before the start of the August term.

The Kilgraston Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to close the school as they faced both short-term and long-term funding deficits following the investor’s withdrawal. Estate agents Savills have now been tasked with putting the Kilgraston site on the market. The site up for sale includes the main A-listed building, 55.45 acres of land, teaching and boarding facilities, a chapel and theatre space, a 25m indoor swimming pool, a gymnasium, sports pitches, and residential properties. Kilgraston has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, with the original Kilgraston House designed by Francis Grant in the 18th century and extended by renowned Scottish architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson.

Danielle Corker of Savills expressed that the Kilgraston site represents a unique investment opportunity with its blend of historical architecture and modern amenities. In the summer of 2023, Kilgraston had faced a similar threat of closure, but Achieve Education Ltd intervened to keep the school running. However, by August 2024, Achieve Education had to reassess their commitment to investing in Kilgraston, leading to the school’s ultimate closure.

The Kilgraston Board of Trustees spokesperson mentioned that they had explored various options to save the school, but none provided a financially sustainable solution, leaving them with no choice but to cease operations. Discussions are ongoing to arrange alternative arrangements for those affected by the closure.

In conclusion, the closure of Kilgraston School marks the end of an era for the long-standing institution. The listing of the school’s building and grounds for sale presents a unique opportunity for potential investors to acquire a historically significant site with redevelopment potential. The future of the Kilgraston site now rests in the hands of prospective buyers looking to transform this iconic property for future use.
