Galloway men return from mercy mission delivering ambulance to war-torn Ukraine

Two Galloway men recently completed a heartwarming mercy mission to Ukraine, returning home after delivering a fully equipped ambulance to the war-torn country. Andrew Macdonald from Kirkcudbright and Iain Gordon from Stranraer undertook the mission to Sumy in northeastern Ukraine, just 25 miles from the front line. The ambulance was stocked with medical equipment, supplies, stretchers, and humanitarian aid, including all-terrain tyres to navigate the winter weather and damaged roads.

The journey, which took 10 days round trip from Galloway, aimed to provide much-needed support to the local population in Ukraine. The ambulance, appropriately named Mira meaning “peace,” was promptly put into service the day after it was handed over to authorities, immediately making a positive impact by saving lives. Andrew and Iain were deeply touched by the gratitude shown by the Ukrainian people, assuring them that they are not alone or forgotten during these challenging times.

Funding for the ambulance was raised through ambulances4ukraine.com, with proceeds from the sale of Christmas cards and prints contributing towards the purchase and delivery of the life-saving vehicle. Moreover, additional funds were used to acquire a Ford Kuga 4×4 within 24 hours of their return, which will serve as a fast response ambulance in the Kharkiv region.

Looking ahead, Andrew plans to drive the newly acquired 4×4 to Ukraine in January, accompanied by Iain who will bring musical instruments and warm children’s clothing to distribute to schools, nurseries, and hospices in an effort to bring some normalcy back to the children’s lives after years of conflict. Further funding is required for future trips and the procurement of more ambulances and minibuses with wheelchair lifts.

The entire initiative remains non-political, focusing solely on providing humanitarian aid and support to those in need. Individuals interested in contributing through instruments, warm children’s clothing, monetary donations, or fundraising efforts are encouraged to visit ambulances4ukraine.com or contact Andrew directly.

In summary, Andrew Macdonald and Iain Gordon’s selfless act of delivering an ambulance to Ukraine highlights the importance of international solidarity and support during times of crisis. Their dedication to helping others in need serves as a reminder of the positive impact individuals can have on communities facing adversity.
