Hard-hitting campaign aims to tackle drink driving in Dumfries and Galloway over festive period

A hard-hitting campaign has been launched in Dumfries and Galloway to tackle the issue of drink and drug driving during the festive period. Last year, there were 55 offences recorded in the region between December 1, 2023, and January 2, 2024, highlighting the seriousness of the problem. The Police Scotland, in collaboration with the Scottish Government, are running the campaign, warning drivers about the risks they pose to themselves and others by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

One of the key aspects of the campaign is the introduction of roadside drug tests using a swab, making it easier for law enforcement to catch offenders. Chief Superintendent Hilary Sloan, head of road policing, emphasised the dedication of officers to target drivers who choose to drink or take drugs. She stressed that the effects of alcohol or drugs can impair reactions and judgement, regardless of how skilled a driver may think they are.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the long-lasting consequences of driving under the influence and remind people that even one drink can push them over the legal limit. Penalties for being caught include a 12-month driving ban, fines of up to £5,000, penalty points, and potential imprisonment for up to six months. Chief Superintendent Sloan urged the public to play their part in improving road safety by intervening if they know someone is planning to drive after drinking or taking drugs.

Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs, Angela Constance, emphasised the destructive impact of driving under the influence on lives and families. She highlighted the potential loss of license, job, and financial repercussions that offenders face. Constance urged individuals to prioritise safety by avoiding driving if they have consumed alcohol or drugs.

The campaign will run throughout the festive period, demonstrating the ease with which drivers can be caught exceeding the legal limits. By creating awareness and enforcement measures, the initiative aims to reduce the incidence of drink and drug driving in Dumfries and Galloway, ensuring the safety of all road users.
