Have your say on future of West Lothian community centre at crunch meeting

Residents of West Lothian have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the future of community centres in the region at a crucial meeting. The Bathgate Community Centre Management Committee is hosting a meeting to discuss the potential roles and options for the town’s Partnership building. This gathering comes in response to widespread concerns raised within communities across the county following the revelation in June that community centres could be transferred out of council ownership.

The meeting, scheduled for Monday night at 7pm, will be conducted online. West Lothian Council is currently evaluating the management of all 31 community centres and village halls in an effort to generate savings of £1m. Community centres have been presented with three options: 1) take ownership through Community Asset Transfer, 2) accept a full repairing and insuring lease, or 3) agree to all charges billed by the council.

Bathgate Community Centre, situated in the Jim Walker Partnership Centre on South Bridge Street, is overseen by the Bathgate Community Centre Management Committee. The committee aims to involve the community and user groups in the decision-making process. Residents are encouraged to join the online meeting to learn about the council’s proposals for Bathgate Partnership, express their views, and understand the committee’s proposed response.

While a deadline of 10th January has been set, it does not signify the final decision-making date but rather a deadline for management committees to communicate their preferred option to the council. Ralph Bell, West Lothian Council’s Customer & Community Service Manager, emphasised the council’s commitment to working with management committees to ensure the continued operation and success of facilities.

The councils advise all management committees to engage with them to discuss the available options and the support they can offer. Individuals interested in joining the meeting on Monday evening are encouraged to contact the Bathgate Community Centre Management Committee via email. Additionally, council officers are available to meet with committee staff either collectively or individually. Further details can be found on the West Lothian Council website.

In conclusion, the proactive steps taken by the Bathgate Community Centre Management Committee and the collaborative efforts between local communities and West Lothian Council demonstrate a commitment to preserving and enhancing the services provided by community centres. By engaging residents in decision-making processes, the aim is to ensure a sustainable and community-focused approach to the management of these vital facilities. Through open dialogue and shared responsibilities, the future of community centres in West Lothian can be shaped to best serve the needs and interests of residents.
