Emergency Crews Found Hayden Panettiere In Cardiac Arrest

Emergency medical personnel and first responders were called to a residence in Greenville on Sunday after a 911 call was made. Panettiere was found “unresponsive” and in cardiac arrest when responders arrived, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Officials said responders immediately “initiated advanced cardiac life support measures” in an attempt to save the actress. Despite those efforts, resuscitation was unsuccessful, and Panettiere was pronounced deceased at 2:32 p.m.

The coroner’s office said Panettiere had been “temporarily staying” at the residence where she was found. The circumstances of why she was staying there have not been detailed in the information provided by authorities.

An autopsy was completed on Monday, according to the coroner’s office. Officials said no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to her death, while the final cause and manner remain pending further investigation and additional testing.

Authorities Have Not Confirmed Her Cause Of Death

The investigation into Panettiere’s death is continuing, meaning several important questions remain unanswered. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office and Greenville City Police Department have launched parallel investigations into what happened before emergency responders arrived.

The completed autopsy did not identify trauma that contributed to her death. However, the absence of traumatic injuries does not by itself establish what caused the cardiac arrest or why the actress died.

Officials have therefore stopped short of announcing a definitive medical explanation. Additional studies are required before the coroner can determine the official cause and manner of death.

Panettiere’s representative previously confirmed her death to ABC News and said the investigation was ongoing. Until authorities release further findings, speculation about what happened remains unconfirmed.

Panettiere Had Been Open About Her Struggles

Panettiere’s career began when she was a child, meaning she spent decades under public scrutiny. Behind the success, however, she had spoken candidly about some of the most difficult periods of her life, including addiction, postpartum depression, trauma and recovery.

In a 2022 interview with Good Morning America, Panettiere discussed her struggle with alcoholism and postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter. She explained that the two experiences had become difficult for her to separate.

“I didn’t know where the alcoholism was ending and the postpartum was beginning,” Panettiere said during the interview. She also acknowledged that she had pushed herself beyond what she could manage.

Panettiere described the years surrounding her time on Nashville as particularly difficult. She said, “The years before were very difficult for me, too. And I just needed a break.”

Her Memoir Revealed The Life Behind The Spotlight

Panettiere continued opening up about her experiences later in life. In May, she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, giving readers a much more personal account of the experiences that had shaped her away from television and film sets.

The memoir addressed subjects including postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse and loss. Its publication marked another major moment in Panettiere’s decision to speak publicly about experiences that had once remained largely private.

Her story had become much broader than her career by that point. She had spent years being recognized for fictional characters, while her memoir allowed her to discuss the reality behind the celebrity image.

Panettiere also publicly discussed her identity around the time of the memoir’s release. In an interview referenced by ABC News, she said she had chosen to share that she identified as bisexual after previously keeping that part of her life private.

She Became A Star While Still A Child

Panettiere’s acting career began early, eventually leading to some of the most recognizable roles of her generation. She became widely known as Claire Bennet on the hit television series Heroes, where she played a young woman with the ability to regenerate after injuries.

The role turned Panettiere into a major television star and introduced her to a huge international audience. She later took another defining role as Juliette Barnes on Nashville, a musical drama that allowed her to combine acting with singing.

Her film career also included several recognizable titles. Her credits included Remember the Titans, Raising Helen, Ice Princess and Scream 4.

Panettiere later returned to the Scream franchise as Kirby Reed, reprising the character in the series’ 2023 installment. Her career therefore stretched from childhood television appearances through major studio films and some of television’s biggest dramas.

Her Brother Jansen Died Suddenly In 2023

Panettiere’s death also comes after another devastating loss in her immediate family. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died suddenly in February 2023 at the age of 28.

According to a statement from his family at the time, Jansen died from cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, coupled with complications involving his aortic valve. His death had a profound effect on Hayden, who later spoke publicly about the grief she carried.

Two years after her brother’s death, Panettiere discussed that loss in an interview with People. She made clear that time had not erased the pain.

“I will always be heartbroken about it,” she said. Panettiere also explained that she did not expect the loss to become something she could simply move beyond.

“I will never be able to get over it,” she said. “No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss.”

Panettiere Leaves Behind Her Daughter

Away from her acting career, Panettiere was also a mother. She had one child, daughter Kaya Klitschko, whom she welcomed in 2014 with her former fiancé, heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Her relationship with Klitschko had placed her in the public spotlight outside Hollywood as well. The couple eventually separated, but they remained connected through their daughter.

Motherhood was also closely connected to the period of Panettiere’s life that she later discussed publicly. Her experiences with postpartum depression became part of her broader story about addiction, recovery and the pressures she faced as a young mother.

Those struggles were among the subjects she addressed in her memoir. Rather than presenting her life as a straightforward celebrity success story, Panettiere described a far more complicated path through fame, family and personal hardship.

Her death now leaves her daughter, family and friends facing a loss that came with little warning.

Her Father Asked For Privacy From The Public

Following Panettiere’s death, her father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement asking for privacy as the family processes what happened.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said. He described his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought love and joy to those around her.

His statement also acknowledged the enormous audience that had followed Panettiere throughout her career. Millions of viewers had watched her grow from a child performer into an established actress through roles that became part of popular television and film culture.

Panettiere would have turned 37 on Friday, meaning her death came only days before her birthday.

For her family, the immediate focus is now on grieving while authorities continue their investigation. The final medical findings are still pending, and officials have not yet provided a definitive explanation for her death.

A Final Chapter That Was More Personal Than Her Fame

Panettiere’s career will always be linked to Claire Bennet and Juliette Barnes, but the final years of her life revealed much more about the woman behind those characters. She spoke publicly about addiction, postpartum depression, recovery, domestic abuse, trauma and the devastating loss of her brother.

She also chose to put those experiences into a memoir, allowing her own voice to become part of the public record. That decision gave fans a glimpse into a life that had often been defined by headlines and fictional roles.

Her death at 36 now leaves the central question with authorities: what caused the cardiac arrest that ended her life? Until the additional studies are completed, that answer remains unknown.

For now, Panettiere’s family has asked for privacy. Her legacy will remain tied to the characters she brought to life, but her own story had already become something far more personal than anything she played on screen.
