Historic Stonehouse fountain to be restored for park centenary in 2025

Historic Stonehouse Fountain to Undergo Restoration for Park’s 2025 Centenary
A grant of nearly £50,000 has been awarded to the friends group of Alexander Hamilton memorial park in Stonehouse to restore the iconic fountain in time for its centenary celebrations in May 2025. The historic fountain is set to undergo a comprehensive restoration programme, including repairs, cleaning, installation of a new plaque, renewal and painting of railings, rebuilding of a brick wall, and path maintenance and repairs. The restoration project is made possible by funding from the renewable energy fund (REF) distributed by South Lanarkshire Council.
The news of the grant has been warmly received by the Stonehouse volunteers, local residents, and supporters of the community group, who have expressed their excitement on social media. John Young, a committee member of Friends of Stonehouse Park and a local historian, expressed his delight at securing the necessary funding to restore the historic landmark. The restoration work is scheduled to start in March and be completed by May, in time for the 100th anniversary of the park’s opening in 1925.
The Alexander Hamilton memorial fountain holds historical significance as one of the original structures in the park, erected to commemorate its opening. The restoration project aligns with the community action plan to enhance heritage and recreational facilities within the park, fostering community engagement and celebrating the park’s legacy. Councillor Robert Brown, chair of the community and enterprise resources committee, praised the restoration efforts, stating that the fountain will serve as a focal point for visitors and residents as the park prepares for centenary celebrations.
This restoration project follows the successful reopening of the park’s bandstand last year, which was a result of dedicated efforts by the friends group. The revitalised bandstand has become a central feature of the park, hosting various community events and activities. The restoration of the fountain is another milestone in preserving the park’s heritage and enhancing the recreational experience for all who visit.
In conclusion, the restoration of the historic fountain in Alexander Hamilton memorial park signifies a meaningful effort to preserve a significant piece of Stonehouse’s history and heritage. The project not only restores a landmark structure but also reflects the community’s dedication to maintaining and celebrating its public spaces. As the park prepares to mark its centenary in 2025, the restored fountain will stand as a testament to the park’s enduring legacy and the collaborative spirit of its volunteers and supporters.
