Illuminating tractor run fundraiser for Dumfries neonatal unit

Hundreds of illuminated tractors and trucks will be embarking on a fundraising road run on Saturday, November 23rd, to support the neonatal unit at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. The event, starting at the Harrison and Hetherington cattle mart in Lockerbie at 2.30pm, will see participants driving from Lockerbie to Dumfries and back, covering an extraordinary marathon to raise funds for the special unit.

Organised by Ryan Muir and his wife Becky, the festive tractor run is in loving memory of Carolyne Muir, who passed away earlier this year. This will mark the fourth year of the fundraiser, with participants adorning their vehicles with Christmas decorations and contributing £20 (cash only) towards the cause. The event will feature raffles, tombolas, and prize games, with trophies awarded for the best-decorated vehicles.

The convoy is scheduled to depart from the mart at 5.30pm, proceeding to the hospital via Dumfries before returning to Lockerbie. With an expected arrival at Whitesands around 6pm to 6.30pm and returning by 9pm, the event will also have the presence of Police Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes. The Muir family’s dedication to the neonatal unit stems from their personal experience with premature births and the exceptional care received there.

Ryan Muir, recognised as the Bev Parish Community Person Of The Year, shared that the fundraising efforts aim to provide essential equipment and training for the neonatal unit staff to enhance care for newborns and their families. Despite challenges faced in previous years, including family health issues, the Muirs remain steadfast in their commitment to supporting the unit.

Expressing gratitude for the community honour bestowed upon him during Lockerbie’s Christmas lights event, Ryan Muir highlighted the significance of dedicating this year’s run to his late mother. He emphasised the importance of giving back to the Neonatal Unit, acknowledging their exceptional dedication and support to both infants and families during challenging times. As preparations are made to ensure a smooth flow of the convoy, residents along the route are advised to plan their travel accordingly to minimise disruptions.
