‘I’m a dentist – there’s simple way to check why you’re getting bad breath’

A dental expert has revealed a simple way to check for bad breath at home, as many people may be concerned about the freshness of their breath. The dentist shared three main reasons for smelly breath and suggested a quick test individuals can do themselves to assess their breath.

The expert advised a straightforward method where individuals can breathe on their hand and then smell it to see if there is an odour. This test can help uncover any unpleasant smells that may indicate bad breath. Additionally, other suggestions included licking the back of the hand and waiting a few seconds before smelling it, or using the spoon-licking test to detect any unwelcome odours.

Furthermore, the dentist highlighted three common causes of bad breath. Firstly, inadequate brushing leading to bacteria build-up in teeth and gums can result in odours. Secondly, gut issues can also contribute to bad breath as gases from the stomach can escape through the mouth. Lastly, poorly fitted dentures or crowns with fungal infections can emit unpleasant smells.

The expert emphasised the importance of regular dental check-ups and maintaining good oral hygiene practices to combat bad breath. The NHS recommended brushing teeth and gums gently twice a day, cleaning the tongue daily, using interdental brushes or floss, and attending regular dental appointments. They also advised against smoking, rinsing the mouth with water immediately after brushing, consuming excessive sugary foods and drinks, and brushing too vigorously.

In conclusion, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for fresh breath. By following simple dental care practices and being mindful of potential causes of bad breath, individuals can ensure their breath stays pleasant. Regular dental visits play a crucial role in monitoring oral health and addressing any underlying issues that may contribute to bad breath.
