ITV legend Alastair Stewart has shared his challenges with dementia, revealing that he struggles with tasks like tying his shoelaces. The 72-year-old, known for his work on ITV and GB News, was diagnosed with the ‘vascular’ form of dementia two years ago, caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. This condition has brought unforeseen difficulties to Alastair’s daily life, including issues with spatial awareness and memory.

One of the most significant challenges for Alastair has been the impact on his relationship with his wife, Sally. Describing it as “demeaning and soul-destroying,” he expressed discomfort at reducing her role to that of a carer. Alastair and Sally have been together for almost half a century, meeting at a television centre in Southampton where Sally worked as a production assistant. Now, with vascular dementia, Alastair relies on Sally for tasks like dressing, travel arrangements, and organizing help when she’s not around.

Sally, in turn, has acknowledged the loss of some independence but emphasised the importance of staying positive for their loved ones, including their children. The couple’s experience reflects the challenges faced by many of the 180,000 people in the UK currently living with vascular dementia. While the condition typically progresses over time, early detection and treatment can help slow its advancement. Symptoms may include cognitive slowness, difficulty planning, mood changes, and concentration problems.
