John Higgins has no memory of UK Championship win and can only remember amazing afterparty

Snooker legend John Higgins recently revealed that his memory of winning the UK Championship in 1998 is a bit fuzzy. Despite securing his first UK Championship title 26 years ago in Bournemouth, Higgins confessed that he can barely recollect the details of the match against Matthew Stevens. However, what remains vivid in his memory is the fantastic party that followed the victory. Reflecting on the wild celebrations that took place with Stevens and their fathers, Higgins fondly recalls the joyous moments shared after the tournament.

While his recollection of his first UK Championship win may be hazy, Higgins distinctly remembers his subsequent triumphs in the tournament, particularly his victories against Mark Williams in 2000 and 2010. The 2010 final, where he overturned a 9-5 deficit to win 10-9, stands out as a remarkable moment in his career. As he prepares for the 2024 UK Championship, Higgins remains grateful for the longevity of his career and the evolution of snooker over the years.

A member of snooker’s renowned ‘Class of 92′ alongside Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams, Higgins has witnessed significant changes in the sport. With snooker’s rising popularity in China and a packed tournament schedule, Higgins acknowledges the professional transformation of the game. Gone are the days of post-tournament revelry, as Higgins, who stopped drinking in 2018, notes the shift towards a more subdued and professional atmosphere in snooker today.

Despite the changes in the game, Higgins expresses gratitude for the opportunities and success snooker has brought him. Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about the future of snooker, especially with the potential for more tournaments in new markets like Saudi Arabia. As he approaches his 50th birthday, Higgins shows no signs of slowing down and is determined to continue competing at the highest level, aiming to qualify for prestigious events like the World Championship.

While the snooker landscape may have evolved since his early days in the sport, Higgins’ passion and dedication to the game remain unwavering. With a renewed focus and a fresh cue in hand, Higgins is poised to continue adding to his impressive legacy in snooker, proving that the Wizard of Wishaw still has magic left to showcase on the green baize.
