Kathryn Hill from the Midsteeple Project spoke to members of Dumfries Rotary Club

Kathryn Hill, the interim executive director of the Midsteeple Project, recently addressed members of Dumfries Rotary Club, outlining the project’s goals and ambitions. Hill expressed her delight in meeting club president Ann Hill, emphasizing the community interest in her relation to Ann since returning to Dumfries from Canada to join the Midsteeple Project team.
Hill provided insight into the origins of the project, which was established in 2018 with the acquisition of the old Baker’s Oven property. Initially used as a pop-up shop, the site has since been transformed into a complex featuring flats, offices, and retail spaces. She shared the Project’s long-term vision, aiming to repopulate the town centre over a 15-year timeline. The project seeks to offer high-quality, affordable housing on upper floors while fostering a diverse local economy on lower levels, all under the stewardship of invested local stakeholders to prevent absentee landlordism.
The next phase of the Midsteeple Project involves developing flats in Bank Street. Hill expressed gratitude for the local business community’s support and highlighted the upcoming challenge of restoring building exteriors with fundraising efforts, supported by Historic Scotland. Additionally, the project is engaged in a feasibility study led by the council on establishing an Independent Heat Network on the High Street.
Members of the Dumfries Rotary Club were impressed by Hill’s passion for the Midsteeple Project and its multifaceted initiatives. Rotarian Maureen McKerrow delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the project’s dedication to revitalizing the town centre and fostering community engagement.
In summary, Kathryn Hill’s presentation at the Dumfries Rotary Club shed light on the Midsteeple Project’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the town centre through innovative housing solutions and economic development strategies. Hill’s enthusiasm and dedication to the project’s long-term goals resonated with attendees, showcasing a collaborative approach to community renewal and sustainable growth.
