Kind Scots schoolkids raise money for teacher who died from crohns disease

Schoolchildren in Scotland are honouring the memory of their beloved teacher, Marie Reilly, who tragically passed away from Crohn’s disease in September 2024. The staff and pupils of Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld, Scotland, have embarked on a fundraising initiative by walking 5km every day throughout December to raise awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This initiative is in collaboration with The Catherine McEwan Foundation, a charity that Marie Reilly actively supported during her lifetime.
The fundraising effort was organized by teacher Mark McAdams, who was deeply touched by Marie’s support when his own wife was diagnosed with IBD. The participating students, under the guidance of Mark, are dedicating their time and effort to honour the memory of their beloved teacher and support a cause close to her heart. The Catherine McEwan Foundation’s founder, Derek McEwan, joined the students at the school to participate in the fundraising activities to commemorate Marie’s legacy.
One of the pupils, Lewis Mackenzie, described Marie as someone who always put others before herself, inspiring him to emulate her selflessness. Mark McAdams highlighted the mental and physical challenges of the fundraiser, acknowledging the busy schedules of the students during the festive season. Despite the difficulties, the students are determined to honour Marie’s memory and support a cause that was important to her.
The emotional impact of Marie’s passing is evident in the dedication shown by the school community in coming together to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s disease. The initiative not only honours Marie’s memory but also fosters a sense of unity and compassion among the students and staff of Greenfaulds High School.
In conclusion, the heartwarming story of the schoolchildren’s efforts to honour their teacher’s memory serves as a touching reminder of the lasting impact that educators have on their students’ lives. Through their actions, the students are not only fundraising for a worthy cause but also embodying the values and spirit instilled in them by Marie Reilly. The dedication and compassion displayed by the school community highlight the strength of their bond and the enduring legacy of a beloved teacher.
