Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse Probus Club members enjoy lunch with a difference

Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse Probus Club members recently enjoyed a unique lunch experience at the Selkirk Arms. The November meeting saw a high turnout, allowing members to catch up with each other over a well-presented meal. The highlight of the gathering was a talk by Kerry Boyes, the founder of Fake Foods Workshop in Kirkcudbright.
Kerry Boyes, a local artist and entrepreneur, shared her journey from childhood creativity in north Yorkshire to studying art and working as a resident artist at Vindolanda on Hadrian’s Wall. Members were intrigued by her background in sculpting and conservation, which led her to create fake and replica food items with an animal theme. Over the past few years, she has expanded her business, catering to a diverse clientele including museums, galleries, film companies, and themed attractions.
During the talk, Kerry demonstrated some basic taxidermy techniques and showcased her creative process in replicating food items like ice cream cones. Members were entertained by her anecdotes, including a humorous reference to her pet cat’s impact on her interest in taxidermy. Her relocation to Kirkcudbright was well-received by the local community, and she invited visitors to explore her shop and workshop.
The Fake Foods Workshop has become a popular destination in Kirkcudbright, offering a range of unique products that have garnered attention both locally and internationally. Kerry Boyes’ presentation not only provided insight into her creative process but also highlighted the importance of local entrepreneurship and artistic innovation within the community. Members left the meeting with a newfound appreciation for the artistry behind fake foods and a sense of pride in supporting a local business.
