Lanarkshire politicians visit Thorntonhall’s proposed Battery Farm site to hear constituents’ concerns

Lanarkshire politicians have made a visit to the proposed site for a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Thorntonhall, to listen to the concerns of local residents. The visit took place prior to the formal planning permission process, which will give the community an opportunity to voice their opinions on the plans. The site, situated at Meikle Dripps Farm on Waterfoot Road, spans around 5.7 hectares of agricultural land.

The BESS project, planned to be a 150 MW facility developed by Apatura and submitted for approval by AAH Consultants to the Energy Consents Unit (ECU) and Scottish Ministers, raised worries among residents regarding potential noise disturbances and fire risks. The closest residential properties are 29 flats located 215 metres away from the proposed site.

East Kilbride MP Joani Reid and Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon were there to engage with local residents during the visit. Concerns were expressed over the safety and transparency of the planning process. The politicians highlighted the need for thorough safety assessments, proper consultation, and a transparent planning process to address the community’s concerns.

Joani Reid urged the people of Thorntonhall to participate in the formal consultation period to ensure all potential impacts, such as noise and fire risks, are carefully evaluated. Likewise, Monica Lennon stressed the importance of considering and addressing all community concerns before a final decision is made. The consultation stage will provide an additional opportunity for individuals and organisations to provide feedback before the planning application undergoes formal review.

Both politicians reiterated their commitment to assisting constituents in ensuring that their concerns are taken into account throughout the planning process. They assured residents that relevant authorities, including South Lanarkshire Council, would thoroughly assess all concerns raised and evaluate the potential impacts on the local community.

In conclusion, the proposed Battery Energy Storage System in Thorntonhall has sparked significant community interest and concern. The involvement of local politicians in listening to residents’ worries and advocating for a thorough and transparent planning process demonstrates the importance of community engagement in such developments. Residents are encouraged to actively participate in the formal consultation period to ensure their voices are heard before any final decisions are made.
