Lanarkshire Tesco stores taking part in annual Winter Food Collection

Tesco stores in Lanarkshire are participating in the 12th annual Tesco Winter Food Collection, where donated items will be given to the charities Trussell and FareShare. Both charities anticipate a high demand for their services this winter, and the Food Collection plays a crucial role in providing additional donations. Ken Murphy, Tesco Group CEO, highlighted the importance of supporting families in need during the festive season, encouraging customers to donate whatever they can to the Winter Food Collection.
Trussell’s research reveals alarming statistics, with nearly a quarter of children under four experiencing hunger and hardship. In the UK, a record 9.3 million people are facing food insecurity. Similarly, FareShare has witnessed an 86% increase in people accessing their services, with a majority seeking support for the first time. To address this, Tesco has increased its support to both charities with a donation of £500,000 each to meet the rising demand during the holiday season.
To facilitate donations, Tesco provides pre-packed customer donation bags filled with long-life, nutritious items in participating stores. This initiative aims to surpass the 2 million meals donated in last year’s collection. The Winter Food Collection is running in Express stores from November 25 to 30 and in large stores from November 28 to 30. Donated food items are passed on to Trussell and FareShare for distribution to those in need.
Emma Revie, Trussell Chief Executive, emphasised the crucial role food banks play in supporting individuals facing hardship. She encouraged the community to utilise opportunities like the Winter Collection to donate and help alleviate hunger. Similarly, Kris Gibbon-Walsh, FareShare Chief Executive, expressed gratitude for Tesco’s continuous support, ensuring supplies reach over 8,000 charities and community groups.
The collaboration between Tesco, Trussell, and FareShare not only provides essential supplies but also fosters a sense of unity and support within the community. The Winter Food Collection serves as a platform for individuals to make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling with food insecurity. By coming together and contributing, Tesco customers in Lanarkshire can help ensure that families facing hardships have access to nutritious meals during the challenging winter months.
In summary, Tesco stores in Lanarkshire are leading the way in supporting families in need through the Winter Food Collection. The partnership with Trussell and FareShare underscores the importance of community-led initiatives in addressing food insecurity. By participating in the collection, Tesco customers have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact and demonstrate solidarity with those experiencing hardship.
