Lib Dem who quit Edinburgh council after house sale scandal also resigns from party

A Scottish Liberal Democrat who recently resigned from her position on the Edinburgh council following a house sale scandal has now also stepped down from the party. Louise Spence’s departure from both roles comes after questions were raised about the sale of her house right after she was elected as a representative for the Colinton/Fairmilehead ward. Spence had highlighted her local ties during her campaign, positioning herself as a champion for the community. She emphasised her commitment to the area by stating, “It’s such a special place – that’s why my husband and I decided this was the right place to bring up our family.”

Concerns arose when it was revealed that she intended to split her time between Edinburgh and another undisclosed location, potentially overseas. The Liberal Democrats were taken aback by this revelation and were unable to provide further details as Spence chose to terminate her party membership. Her decision to resign as a councillor was reportedly based on a “sudden change in personal circumstances,” leaving many unanswered questions.

As the Liberal Democrats navigate these developments, a by-election is set to take place in the New Year to fill the vacancy left by Spence’s resignation. The opposing Conservative Party has urged the Liberal Democrats to bear some of the costs associated with the by-election. Meanwhile, senior Labour councillor Stephen Jenkinson expressed astonishment at the unfolding situation, stating, “This is the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard of in local politics.”

In a political landscape where alliances and support are crucial, Spence’s actions may have broader implications for the balance of power within the Edinburgh council and its decision-making processes. With the upcoming by-election, political observers will be closely monitoring the developments and potential repercussions of Spence’s resignations on the local political scene.
