Lifesaving dogs needed to donate blood for other pooches this Christmas

Lifesaving dogs in East Kilbride are being called upon to donate blood for other pooches in need this Christmas. Stock levels of lifesaving blood for dogs often decrease during the holiday season, prompting an appeal for dogs to step forward and make a Christmas donation at Vets4Pets East Kilbride on Sunday, December 22.

Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the sole charity in the UK providing a blood bank service for all veterinarians across the country. Just one blood donation from a dog can potentially save the lives of up to four other dogs, making each donation incredibly impactful.

Dogs between the ages of one and eight, weighing over 25kg, and in good health are encouraged to register for donation sessions. Particularly needed are dogs with negative blood types, such as Dobermanns, German Shepherds, and Greyhounds, as this blood type can be given to any dog in emergency situations.

A spokesperson for the charity emphasised the importance of dog blood donations, especially during December when donation levels tend to drop. They highlighted that the service provided by Pet Blood Bank UK is similar to that of human blood services, with donations from dogs going towards saving the lives of other canines in need.

The donation process typically takes 5-10 minutes, with dogs receiving a health check beforehand and plenty of treats and attention throughout the appointment. Dog owners interested in registering their pets as donors or booking an appointment for the donation session in East Kilbride are encouraged to visit the Pet Blood Bank UK website or call 01509 232222.

This initiative allows dogs in East Kilbride and across the UK to have access to lifesaving blood when necessary, demonstrating the vital impact of canine blood donations in saving lives within the dog community.
