Loganair flight to Aberdeen forced to return to Manchester after lightning cracks windshield


A Loganair flight bound for Aberdeen had to return to Manchester Airport after lightning struck the aircraft, causing the windshield to crack. Flight LM26 was redirected back to its starting point following the lightning strike, as reported on flight tracking sites. The incident occurred as the plane was en route to Aberdeen from Manchester at approximately 4.30pm. About 30 minutes into the journey, the plane looped back to Manchester after reaching Skipton. The Embraer ERJ 145EU plane ascended to 16,000 ft before the pilots declared an emergency and decided to return. The aircraft landed back at Manchester Airport around 29 minutes after take-off.

A Loganair spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the safety of passengers and crew is their top priority. They reassured that the passengers will be accommodated to reach their final destination. The airline had issued prior warnings of possible disruptions due to adverse weather conditions following Met Office alerts for wind and rain across the UK until the weekend.

Loganair offered passengers the flexibility to adjust travel plans without charges for flights affected by the weather warnings. Airports impacted on specific dates were listed, including those on the Isle of Man, Liverpool, Manchester, and other locations. The Met Office warning for Manchester highlighted the potential for near gale-force winds causing travel disruptions.

In another development, a tsunami warning was issued after a significant earthquake hit the US west coast. Authorities detected a preliminary magnitude seven earthquake off the coast of Ferndale, in Humboldt County. The news has sparked concerns and precautionary measures among residents and local authorities.
