Man had petrol thrown in his face by gang who turned up at his Wishaw flat

A man in Wishaw had petrol thrown in his face by a gang that showed up at his flat in search of drugs. The victim managed to prevent further harm by convincing the attackers that they had the wrong person. William McAslan, 19, from Bridgeton, Glasgow, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he confessed that he, along with unidentified accomplices, broke into the flat and attacked the victim with the intention to rob him.

The incident, which occurred on Overtown Road on 12 May last year, left the victim temporarily blinded by the liquid that was thrown at him. Despite being on bail for another issue at the time, McAslan and his associates forcibly entered the flat and demanded drugs, believing the victim had what they were looking for. The victim, aged 20, faced a terrifying ordeal as the attackers shouted and assaulted him before realising their mistake and leaving the scene.

The victim, after being taken to the hospital and receiving treatment, eventually regained his visibility. The court was informed by Aga Mathieson, the prosecutor, about the harrowing experience faced by the victim during the attack. As McAslan’s sentence was deferred for background reports and assessment, Sheriff Michael Higgins highlighted the severity of the crime, emphasizing the distress caused to the victim.
