We’ve all dealt with some surly people in this world. It seems to be a right-of-passage to existing. However, sometimes someone new comes out to surprise even the most experienced of us! It’s time to introduce you to Bryan Tucker, a man entirely dedicated to the protection of his lawn, even if that means ruining childish fun and putting kids directly in danger’s way. Here’s all you need to know about the man who installed an electric fence in order to enforce his “no trespassing” rules in the face of school children! (1, 2)
Bryan Tucker’s Electric Fence
As it turns out, Tucker was entirely fed up with the children in his neighborhood trespassing on his property. Instead of simply asking them to stay off his grass like your normal grumpy neighbor, however, he decide to implement an extreme strategy that would alienate anyone from setting foot on his grass. Tucker installed an electric fence to “keep the children away.” He didn’t settle for your normal wood fence, or even a scary metal one with spikes on the top. Rather, he invested in a fully functional electric fence that could likely cause a great deal of discomfort or even injury to anyone who accidentally touched it! (1)
While some people might think Tucker’s actions were perhaps somewhat justified (no one wants a bunch of strangers trampling their lawn, after all), the fact is that Tucker’s property is only a few feet away from a school bus stop in Henrico County, Virginia. Children who occasionally set foot on his property only did so on their way home, possibly to even avoid walking in the way of traffic on the road! According to Tucker, he installed the fence due to frustrations from kids throwing trash and walking on his lawn after school let out. Tucker planned his revenge carefully, deciding to put the fence up on the very day that school started up again in his county! The neighborhood reaction to his fence was obviously turbulent. (1)
Parental Reactions To Tucker’s Electric Fence
Understandably, parents of the neighborhood were furious with Tucker and his new electric statement. Namely, parents were angered that Tucker failed to put up any kind of warning sign to alert someone of potential harm if the fence were to be touched. While there are two signs posted on Tucker’s property reading, “Private Property – hunting, fishing, trapping or trespassing for any purpose is strictly forbidden. Violators will be persecuted,” there was no warning near or around the electric fence alerting someone of its electrical qualities. Parents were obviously concerned for the safety of their children, not knowing what kind of harm getting electrocuted from such a fence would cause. (1)
According to James Mehfoud, a resident of the area, “I touched it, I got a slight shock, it wasn’t that great. I understand [Tucker’s] concern. I just don’t think he understood the neighbors’ concern about their kids. One of them could touch it, fall into it, and get shocked.” Parents didn’t seem to have an issue with the fact that Tucker wanted his grass to be protected, but the idea that their child could be accidentally electrocuted left many of them outraged. (1, 3)
Conclusion
Perhaps in response to the neighborhood feud between Tucker, Tucker’s fence, and the neighborhood parents, County Officials got involved. They ended up notifying Tucker that his fence was violating County Code. It turned out that Tucker’s yard began further away from the road than he had placed his fence, meaning that the fence was on county property and it was a violation for Tucker to keep it there. Since officials called him out for the illegality of his fence, Tucker had no choice but to take it down. However, he was told that he was allowed to reinstall it as long as it was within his property line. (1)
What would you do if you didn’t want kids walking on your lawn after school? And how would you have responded to Tucker’s electric fence?
