Man says spending £14,000 on ‘Turkey teeth’ was ‘worst mistake of my life’

Man Regrets Spending £14,000 on ‘Turkey Teeth’
Matthew Bowen, a 35-year-old man, has spoken out about his experience of spending £14,000 on what he calls ‘Turkey teeth’, describing it as the “worst mistake of my life”. Matthew underwent a dental procedure for crowns in the Middle East in January last year.
The decision stemmed from dental issues Matthew faced since the age of 19, following a broken jaw from an assault. Suffering from crumbling teeth, he sought crowns that were not available on the NHS and would have cost £27,000 if done privately in the UK. Upon a Turkish friend’s recommendation, Matthew opted for treatment at the Aras Selcuk Advanced Dentistry clinic in Marmaris for £7,800.
The procedure involved the removal of 18 teeth and insertion of 12 metal implants, followed by a three-month healing period before porcelain crowns were to be fitted. However, Matthew faced severe pain post-operation, making it challenging for him to carry on daily activities. Subsequent issues arose, with his crowns falling apart within weeks of being inserted, prompting a second operation in August 2023.
Despite efforts to rectify the situation, including a visit to the clinic in August 2024, Matthew found no relief. Dr Selcuk, the dentist, highlighted that the issues were normal and cited patient care and caution during activities as important factors in maintaining dental health.
Matthew shared his frustration at the ongoing problems with his teeth, impacting his diet and daily life. He has incurred additional costs of £6,200 for travel and accommodation, besides the clinic charges. Facing challenges in seeking corrective treatment in the UK, Matthew is preparing for another operation in Turkey, costing £4,000, to salvage his dental implants.
Dr Selcuk’s clinic, boasting of numerous satisfied patients, defended its procedures, asserting adherence to industry standards. The dentist advised patients to be cautious with their dental care practices to avoid complications.
As Matthew braces himself for yet another procedure, he reflects on the difficulties faced and the financial and emotional toll it has taken on him.
Matthew Bowen’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the risks and challenges associated with medical tourism and highlights the importance of thorough research and consideration before embarking on such procedures. It underscores the impact of healthcare decisions on individuals and the significance of post-operative care and follow-up in ensuring successful outcomes.
