Met Office issue yellow warning for Scotland as snow and ice to hit today

Met Office issues yellow warning for Scotland as snow and ice are expected to hit today. The warning, which covers a period from 4 pm today until 11 am tomorrow, has been issued for several areas in Scotland. Among the regions expected to experience wintry conditions are Aberdeenshire and Moray in the north east, as well as the Highlands, Orkney, and Shetland. The forecast suggests that showers will increasingly become wintry throughout Sunday, with a mix of hail, sleet, and snow predicted. Though minimal snow may settle at lower levels during the day, 1 to 3cm could accumulate by evening. Areas above 300 metres could see 5 to 10cm of snow by Monday morning.

As temperatures are set to drop below freezing overnight, residents are advised to be cautious of icy surfaces. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, with drivers urged to carry essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, and ice scraper/deicer in case of any delays or road closures. Pedestrians are advised to use pavements and main roads, while cyclists are urged to stick to main routes. Andy Page, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, stated, “We have issued yellow warnings for snow and ice as cold weather moves in from the north. This brings snow showers and some ice to parts of Scotland on Sunday night, and then the potential for a spell of snow to lead to disruption to some transport routes across a central swathe of the UK on Tuesday morning. Gusty winds in the east also remain a potential hazard.”

Updates on the weather warnings are expected, so it is vital to stay informed with the latest forecasts.

As Scotland prepares for the arrival of snow and icy conditions, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this winter weather spell. The Met Office’s yellow warning serves as a reminder for people to be vigilant while travelling and to be prepared for potential disruptions caused by the wintry conditions. It is essential to monitor updates on the weather forecast and follow any advice or guidelines provided to stay safe and informed.
