Mobile phone ban at Perthshire school has made pupils ‘more sociable and created safer space’


A school in Perthshire has implemented a ban on mobile phones in classrooms, which has resulted in pupils being more sociable and creating a safer space, according to reports. Morrison’s Academy in Crieff made the decision to remove smartphones from the classroom in order to promote mental health and enhance learning. The ban, which was put in place at the beginning of the last school term, requires students from S1-S5 to switch off and keep away their phones and smartwatches upon arrival at the school gates.

The rector of Morrison’s Academy, Andrew McGarva, explained that the aim of the ban is to ensure healthy and proportionate interactions with the digital world. While recognising the benefits of technology, the school acknowledges the potential negative impact of excessive mobile phone usage on education and mental wellbeing. McGarva highlighted the positive outcomes of the ban, noting that pupils feel liberated from their devices, leading to more sociable interactions during breaks.

Any student caught using a mobile phone during school hours has their device confiscated and can only retrieve it at the end of the day. Headphones and Air Pods are also prohibited, and pupils participating in after-school activities must keep their devices out of sight. Although there was initially mixed feedback from senior pupils, many are beginning to appreciate the benefits of the ban. S1 pupil Anna expressed her approval of the new policy, noting increased social interactions amongst peers during breaks.

The decision to enforce the ban was made by the school prior to the Scottish Government’s guidance allowing headteachers to restrict mobile phone usage in schools. Extensive research on the risks associated with excessive phone use was shared with staff, pupils, and parents to prepare them for the policy change. Colin Nicoll, Assistant Rector and Head of Pastoral Care, highlighted the positive changes resulting from the ban, including a safer environment free from social media-related risks.

Removing mobile phones from the school day has resulted in pupils becoming more engaged in face-to-face interactions and building friendships. By eliminating distractions and reducing anxiety associated with the virtual world, the school aims to create a conducive learning environment. The ban has proven to be a significant adjustment for pupils who have grown up with smartphones and rely on technology for various aspects of their lives.
