Multi-faith service in Dumbarton to reflect on current conflict in Middle East

A multi-faith service is set to take place in Dumbarton to provide a space for reflection on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The event, scheduled for Wednesday (November 6) at St Augustine’s Church, aims to unite Christians, Jews, and Muslims in expressing their hopes for peace in the region amidst the prolonged violence. The initiative was spearheaded by West Dunbartonshire Provost Karen Murray Conaghan, in collaboration with Reverend Heller Gonzalez of St Augustine’s Episcopal Church and Levette Callander of Dumbarton Churches Together.
Levette, who has been involved with the charity Embrace the Middle East, shared that the idea for the service stemmed from conversations with Provost Murray Conaghan. Many individuals in the community felt helpless and overwhelmed by the conflict, despite previous fundraising efforts. The service intends to offer a non-political platform for individuals to gather, reflect, and pray together, focusing on the plight of innocent civilians affected by the crisis. The emphasis lies on unity and empathy, rather than division and prejudice, as attendees engage in readings from various faith traditions, moments of silence, and shared prayers.
Provost Murray Conaghan expressed her dismay at the distressing news emerging from the Middle East and highlighted the importance of coming together to seek solace and envision a more peaceful future. The organisers stressed that the service is not intended to incite political debates or animosity but to foster understanding, compassion, and a collective desire for an end to suffering in the region. The inclusive and contemplative gathering is open to all and will commence at 7.30pm at St Augustine’s Church, welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate.
In conclusion, the multi-faith service in Dumbarton exemplifies the power of community solidarity and interfaith collaboration in times of turmoil. By providing a space for quiet reflection and shared prayers, the event offers hope for peace and unity amidst ongoing conflicts. Such initiatives not only promote reconciliation and understanding but also serve as a poignant reminder of the common humanity that binds us all together, transcending religious and cultural divides.
