Whelan, who pleaded guilty to wounding without intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place, received a 15-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid work and attend up to 25 days of rehabilitation activities.

In his defense, Whelan’s lawyer highlighted that he regretted his actions and acknowledged that he misjudged the situation. Whelan justified his actions by claiming he felt threatened by the victim. Despite this explanation, the court held him accountable for his actions, emphasizing that his behavior was inexcusable.

After serving time on remand since the assault, Whelan is expected to face extradition proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The court acknowledged his age and his absence from police trouble for several decades but emphasized the seriousness of the offense at hand.
