Mum sheds half her body weight after spotting two words on doctor’s computer

A remarkable journey of weight loss and transformation led a mother to shed over half her body weight and be named ‘Slimmer of the Year’. Ali Ridgley, aged 52, achieved a stunning 13st (82kg) weight loss, earning her the prestigious title of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year for 2024. The military mess manager from Plymouth, Devon, was inspired to take action after seeing the term ‘morbidly obese’ in her medical records during a routine check-up.
At her heaviest, Ridgley weighed nearly 23st (145kg), and the shocking realisation on the doctor’s computer screen became a turning point in her life. Motivated to live life to the fullest, she embarked on a journey that led her to not only lose an incredible amount of weight but also gain new passions such as training for a marathon and running her own dance classes. Despite her transformation, she proudly maintains her love for food and describes herself as a ‘foodie’.
Ali’s transformation began when she joined a Slimming World group in Southway in 2019. Through a combination of healthy eating and gradually incorporating exercise into her routine, she successfully slimmed down to 9st 13 1⁄2lbs, dropping from a size 30 to a size six. Embracing Slimming World’s healthy eating approach, Ali’s dietary changes reflect a significant shift towards a healthier lifestyle.
Reflecting on her journey, Ali expressed her gratitude for the support she received and the positive changes she made for herself and her family. She shared her joy at upcoming milestones, including becoming a fit and active grandmother, highlighting the newfound energy and confidence she has gained through her weight loss journey.
