N-ice work from Dumfries and Galloway’s Gelato star

A Lochmaben cafe in Dumfries and Galloway has achieved recognition in the Manchester heat of the World Gelato Masters Festival. Martin Crolla, representing A Crolla & Sons, secured a runners-up prize in the competition. The cafe, which has been in the Crolla family for four generations, is managed by Martin along with his cousin Sean and mum Roslyn. Martin dedicated his entry to his father and mentor, Lorenzo, who is also a partner in the business.
Despite facing tough competition from some of the UK’s top gelato chefs, Martin expressed his pride in being awarded the runners-up prize. He named his creation “Lorenzo” in honour of his father, featuring a White Chocolate and Honey Gelato with a Raspberry Variegato and Pistachio Crema. Martin shared his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his family, Gelateria, and town, thanking everyone involved in the event.
The Crolla family’s ice cream legacy dates back to 1915 when Jeremiah Crolla founded the business. Traditionally offering only one flavour, vanilla, the cafe expanded to producing 20 flavours after modernizing its equipment and rebranding in 2019. Originally hailing from Italy, the Crolla family settled in Lochmaben after various moves within the UK.
In addition to this recent achievement, A Crolla & Sons claimed multiple accolades in the Scottish Italian Awards last year, including Best Family-Run Business. The cafe continues to uphold its reputation for quality gelato and desserts, attracting recognition for its commitment to excellence in the industry.
The Crolla family’s dedication to preserving its gelato-making heritage and commitment to innovation have solidified their position as key contributors to the local culinary scene. With a rich history spanning over a century, A Crolla & Sons remains a celebrated establishment in Dumfries and Galloway.
Overall, the story of Martin Crolla and A Crolla & Sons highlights the importance of family traditions, dedication to craft, and the pursuit of excellence in the world of artisan gelato. It serves as a reminder of the value of heritage and innovation in creating a lasting impact within a community and beyond.
