Nature reserve warden is guest speaker at Motherwell Photographic Society

Nature reserve warden, David Anderson, was the guest speaker at the recent meeting of the Motherwell Photographic Society. The event, hosted at Holytown Community Centre, featured David’s presentation titled “RSPB Baron’s Haugh: Creating a Better, Wetter Future.” He shared insights into the history of the Baron’s Haugh Nature Reserve in Motherwell and highlighted what makes it a unique and treasured place.
Baron’s Haugh, spanning across 107 hectares, attracts around 40,000 visitors annually who come to appreciate the diverse wildlife and picturesque woodland walks. During his talk, David delved into the various wildlife species that inhabit the reserve, their habitats, and the environmental challenges they face, particularly in the wake of climate change impacts.
Under David’s stewardship, Baron’s Haugh has undertaken initiatives to enhance its biodiversity, such as the creation of new wetlands and a three-hectare wildflower meadow. Attendees were treated to a visual showcase through videos showcasing the conservation work carried out by the reserve’s team and volunteers, alongside captivating photographs of the wildlife that call the reserve home.
Following the presentation, a question-and-answer session ensued, allowing members to engage with David and gain further insights. Rodger Shearer, the club’s vice-president, extended gratitude to David for his informative presentation and recognised the dedication reflected in the conservation efforts at Baron’s Haugh.
The upcoming meeting, scheduled for November 28, will feature George Robertson, an acclaimed photographer and global explorer, who will present “The Snows of Kilimanjaro – Trekking on Africa’s Highest Mountain.” The Motherwell Photographic Society invites photography enthusiasts of all levels to join their gatherings, with meetings held every Thursday at 7.30 pm.
Membership to the society comes at an annual fee of £30, with a nominal £2 weekly charge for attending meetings inclusive of refreshments. The community centre provides a welcoming space for individuals passionate about photography to come together, share skills, and learn from distinguished speakers in the field. Wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photography aficionados alike are encouraged to participate and immerse themselves in the captivating world of visual storytelling.
In conclusion, the Motherwell Photographic Society continues to foster a vibrant community of creative individuals who are united by their shared love for capturing and appreciating the beauty of nature and wildlife through the lens of a camera. With each guest speaker bringing a unique perspective and narrative to the table, these gatherings serve as a platform for learning, inspiration, and camaraderie amongst like-minded individuals.
