‘Never’ microwave food in plastic containers as expert reveals alarming reason


Toxicology expert Dr Yvonne Burkart has raised a red flag against microwaving food in plastic containers, citing alarming reasons for her advice. In a recent appearance on the Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO Podcast, Dr Burkart highlighted that even a few seconds in the microwave can lead to the release of billions of microplastic particles into the food. She stressed that these particles do not break down in the body and can have harmful effects.

Steven Bartlett, the host, asked about the safety of using plastic containers for heating food, to which Dr Burkart responded with a firm “Absolutely not.” She explained that the microplastic release is a concerning issue, especially since these particles can persist and pose health risks. Even when containers are labelled as “BPA free,” Dr Burkart cautioned that they still contain plastic and are not suitable for microwaving due to the release of microplastics and potentially harmful chemicals like phthalates.

Dr Burkart’s warning is supported by Healthline, which advises against microwaving plastic unless it is specifically labelled for that purpose. The concern stems from the potential leaching of harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates into food, which can disrupt hormones and have negative health impacts such as obesity, diabetes, and reproductive harm.

Moreover, Dr Burkart highlighted research indicating that newborn babies may already have microplastics in their bodies, suggesting prenatal exposure to these particles. Given the risks associated with microwaving plastic, experts recommend opting for safer alternatives when heating or storing food to minimise exposure to potentially harmful substances.
