New Lanark welcomes volunteers and students to help with projects at World Heritage site

New Lanark World Heritage Site is calling for volunteers and students to assist with various projects at the historic location. The site, recognised by Unesco, is collaborating with institutions such as New College Lanarkshire to engage community volunteers and placement students in tasks ranging from supporting school activities to hydro engineering and the restoration of a cherished exhibit.

Among the projects volunteers will undertake is the ongoing restoration of the 1911 Petrie & Co steam engine, aiming to bring it back to operational status for visitors to experience once more. Additionally, volunteers will work on revitalising and upkeeping the tranquil roof garden on the site. New Lanark’s student placement programme, starting in January, will offer students opportunities in fields like museum studies, engineering, marketing, and tourism.

Mairi Nicolson, head of Lanarkshire Business School at New College Lanarkshire, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the enrichment opportunities provided to students through work placements at one of Scotland’s most significant heritage sites. The site has welcomed 16 new community volunteers, who have already received specialised conservation training from Industrial Museums Scotland and are involved in tasks such as collections care, event support, and mechanical maintenance.

One of the recent volunteers, Terry Joiner, shared her positive experience, describing how volunteering at New Lanark has given structure and purpose to her retirement. She appreciates the friendly and supportive environment, the chance to try new challenges, and the opportunity to interact with visitors, especially schoolchildren learning about the site’s history.
