New study finds two drinks ‘can counteract fatty foods’

A new study by researchers from the University of Birmingham has found that consuming a drink rich in flavanols, such as green tea or cocoa, may help counteract the negative effects of high-fat foods, particularly during stressful periods. The scientists discovered that flavanols found in these beverages can protect the body against stress, even after consuming fatty meals. This study sheds light on how food choices made under stress can impact cardiovascular health.

Dr Catarina Rendeiro, Assistant Professor in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Birmingham, explained that high-fat foods can impair the body’s vascular recovery from stress. By incorporating high-flavanol foods like cocoa into a high-fat meal, the detrimental impact of stress on the body can be alleviated. Rosalind Baynham, who led the study, highlighted the health benefits of flavanols found in various fruits, vegetables, tea, and nuts.

The research involved young, healthy adults consuming a high-fat meal alongside either a high-flavanol or low-flavanol cocoa drink. The results showed that the high-flavanol cocoa drink was effective in preventing the decline in vascular function post-stress and fat intake, compared to the low-flavanol option. Participants who consumed the high-flavanol cocoa had higher vascular function measurements following a stressful event.

Dr Rendeiro recommended opting for minimally processed cocoa powder and including green tea, black tea, and berries in the diet for their flavanol content. She advised aiming for a daily intake of 400 to 600 mg of flavanols for potential health benefits. This research suggests that integrating flavanol-rich foods and drinks into the diet could help mitigate the impact of poor food choices on vascular health during stressful periods.

In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of flavanol-rich beverages like green tea and cocoa to counteract the negative effects of high-fat foods, particularly in stressful situations. By making informed dietary choices and incorporating flavanol-rich foods, individuals may support their vascular health, especially during times of stress.
