North Lanarkshire basketball official receives sportscotland award


A basketball official from North Lanarkshire has been honoured with the Young Official of the Year award at the sportscotland Coaching, Officiating, and Volunteering (COV) Awards 2024. Finlay Thompson has been commended for his commitment and dedication to basketball in the region, particularly through his involvement with the NL Chiefs Basketball Club. Thompson’s significant contributions to the club this year include officiating 54 fixtures across different age levels, from under 14s to seniors. As a qualified level one referee, he has officiated at national and local league levels, and he is also pursuing coaching qualifications with Basketball Scotland.

Thompson’s passion for basketball is described as infectious, and his efforts have allowed numerous individuals to enjoy the benefits of participating in sports. Hailing from Cumbernauld, Thompson shared, “I wanted to learn a bit more about the rules and get a better understanding of the game because I play as well. So I did a course and really liked it. I really enjoy it, you meet a lot of great people doing it as well.” Ross Dillon, a player and coach at NL Chiefs Basketball Club, praised Thompson for his communication skills and positive presence during training sessions. The sportscotland COV Awards aim to recognise individuals who play crucial roles in supporting and promoting sports within their communities, inspiring others and offering their time to make sports accessible to all.

Approximately 300 nominations were received this year, covering 34 different sports and all 32 local authorities in Scotland. The COV award recipients were invited to a presentation ceremony at Glasgow City Chambers on November 7. Forbes Dunlop, the Chief Executive of sportscotland, emphasised the importance of acknowledging those who dedicate their time and effort to the development of sports in their communities, positively impacting both sports and the lives of others.
