North Lanarkshire residents continue to be supported in council efforts to prevent homelessness

Residents in North Lanarkshire are receiving ongoing support from the council in their efforts to prevent homelessness, as the number of people declaring themselves homeless has risen by 16% in the past year. The council’s Rapid Re-Housing Transition Plan (RRTP) focuses on providing sustainable, permanent housing and reducing reliance on temporary accommodation through personalized solutions. Launched in 2018, the RRTP brings together various council services, housing associations, and local partners to address homelessness comprehensively.
The council has introduced targeted actions to assist individuals facing homelessness, with considerable progress made possible by funding from the Scottish Government’s Ending Homelessness Together Fund. This year, £381,000 has been allocated to continue RRTP projects aimed at swiftly transitioning individuals and families into permanent housing. Key accomplishments include a reduction in the average time spent in temporary accommodation to 131 days, innovative support programmes for people with complex needs, financial assistance for vulnerable individuals, and initiatives to support families and children at risk of homelessness.
Councillor Michael McPake, convener of housing, emphasised the council’s commitment to supporting vulnerable residents and improving housing stability. Despite the increase in homelessness figures, the council’s collaborative approach with multiple agencies has yielded positive outcomes. Additionally, the council is piloting a new housing allocation approach to expedite the rehousing process for those declaring as homeless, with the aim of evaluating and enhancing future policies based on the trial results.
The council’s newly approved Homelessness Action Plan (2025-2028) builds upon the existing RRTP objectives, aiming to further decrease homelessness rates and enhance housing access and support services across the region. Residents concerned about housing or at risk of homelessness are urged to contact their local housing office or the emergency out-of-hours service promptly.
In summary, North Lanarkshire Council’s ongoing efforts, supported by collaborative partnerships and targeted interventions, exemplify a proactive and multi-faceted approach to combat homelessness in the region. By prioritising sustainable housing solutions, personalised support, and innovative programmes, the council is striving to make a tangible difference in improving housing stability and reducing the impact of homelessness on individuals and families.
