Children at a nursery in Carntyne, Glasgow, were overjoyed as they witnessed the arrival of a former Clockwork Orange subway carriage in their play area. The kids, dressed in helmets and high-visibility gear, watched in amazement as the carriage was lifted into the air before being gently placed within the nursery grounds. This special delivery was made possible by rail industry lawyer Ben Denton-Cardew, who made it his mission to find new homes for the historic subway carriages after they were decommissioned earlier this year.

Ben Denton-Cardew, a former University of Glasgow student, expressed his sentimental attachment to the subway carriages, referring to them as more than just trains but as iconic symbols of Glasgow. He highlighted the significance of preserving these carriages that have been an integral part of the city’s transportation network for over 40 years. The recent upgrade to modern subway stock in July necessitated the retirement of the old carriages to meet the growing demands of commuters.

Out of the listed historic subway carriages put up for sale to community and non-profit organisations for £5,000 each, Ivy on the Park nursery was fortunate to secure one for the children’s enjoyment. The nursery in Carntyne is only one of two schools in Glasgow to have acquired a subway carriage for educational and play purposes. Plans are underway to transform other carriages into community and art spaces at various locations across the city, further enriching the local cultural scene.
