Participants in the study, who were men in the early stages of high blood pressure, were divided into two groups. Keane explained, “Compared to the placebo, we observed that cherry juice concentrate reduced peak blood pressure by 7mmHg. The blood pressure-lowering effects of cherry juice are comparable to those achieved by certain antihypertensive drugs such as beta blockers and diuretics in individuals with mild hypertension.”
The study’s findings indicate that Montmorency cherries could complement standard treatments for hypertension. Keane further added, “We discovered that the most significant improvements in systolic blood pressure were seen in individuals with the highest blood concentrations of some of the phenolic compounds found in Montmorency cherries. Phenolic compounds, long overlooked, are now gaining considerable attention for their potential health benefits.”
