Parent council blown away by turnout for Rutherglen school’s Christmas fundraiser

The parent council at a primary school in Rutherglen was astounded by the overwhelming response to their annual Christmas fair fundraiser. Hundreds of people from the local community gathered at Calderwood Primary on Buchanan Drive on Saturday, November 30, forming long queues to participate in the festive event. Adding to the joyous occasion, Santa made a special appearance at the fair, delighting children and adults alike as he arrived with a couple of his reindeer companions.

The event, organised by the school’s parent council, featured a range of attractions including Santa’s grotto, a reindeer meet-and-greet in the playground, a traders’ hall, cafe, home baking stall, games, eco-uniforms, a toy and book sale, as well as raffles and tombolas. From 10am to 1pm, the fundraiser raised an impressive £9,300 in pure profit for the school, marking it as the most successful fundraising event to date.

Elaine Miller, the chair of the parent council, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. She highlighted the generosity of individuals who donated prizes, time, and money to make the fair a success. Miller credited the dedicated school staff and volunteers who helped set up and run the event, underscoring the importance of such fundraising efforts in light of budget cuts by South Lanarkshire Council. All funds raised will be reinvested into the school to enhance the students’ learning experience, supporting activities such as school trips, essential resources, sports kits, and IT equipment.

Santa’s presence, along with the festive activities, attracted a tremendous turnout from the school community, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and support for a worthwhile cause. The success of the Christmas fundraiser not only brought joy and merriment to attendees but also showcased the power of community efforts in bolstering educational initiatives and enriching the school experience for children.

In conclusion, the heartwarming response to the Rutherglen school’s Christmas fundraiser highlights the spirit of unity and generosity within the local community. The event’s success serves as a testament to the invaluable role of parent councils, volunteers, and supporters in enhancing educational opportunities for students amidst challenging financial circumstances. Such initiatives not only raise essential funds but also foster a sense of togetherness and shared commitment to nurturing the growth and development of young learners.
