Perth and Kinross’ most disadvantaged families set to be given devices and internet access

Perth and Kinross’ most disadvantaged families are set to receive digital devices and internet access, thanks to a new initiative by the Scottish Government. The government has announced a £10 million investment in 2025/26 to provide devices, internet access, and the necessary skills for Scotland’s most disadvantaged households.
The Scottish Government’s commitment comes in response to concerns raised about whether local pupils would receive the digital devices promised in the SNP’s 2021 election manifesto. This update was provided to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, assuring that efforts are underway to ensure that disadvantaged families in Perth and Kinross and across Scotland have access to digital resources.
Previously, in 2021, John Swinney, now the first minister, pledged to provide laptops, Chromebooks, or tablets to every school child in Scotland, along with free internet connection and technical support. The devices would be updated, replaced, and upgraded as needed to support students throughout their school years.
At a recent meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s Learning and Families Committee, concerns were raised about the distribution of devices to pupils in the region. While some local authorities have already implemented projects to provide devices to students, Perth and Kinross has not adopted a one-to-one device policy. The council’s focus is on building digital skills and capacity among students and educators, emphasizing the importance of balanced technology use and the potential impact of excessive screen time on young people’s eyesight.
Following the meeting, the Scottish Government confirmed its commitment to supporting families in getting online. The £10 million investment will facilitate the provision of devices, internet access, and necessary skills for disadvantaged households, with plans for implementation in 2025-26 in partnership with Connecting Scotland.
In summary, the Scottish Government’s initiative to provide digital devices and internet access to disadvantaged families in Perth and Kinross and across Scotland reflects a commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equal access to digital resources for all students. By investing in digital skills and resources, the government aims to empower families and support learning opportunities in an increasingly digital world.
