Perth MP in plea to UK Government over Levelling Up funding “shambles” for city projects

Perth MP Calls on UK Government to Resolve Levelling Up Funding “Shambles”
Perth and Kinross-shire MP, Pete Wishart, has urged the UK Government to address the funding uncertainty surrounding three significant projects in Perth after it was revealed that the Levelling Up funding is set to be withdrawn. Wishart’s plea follows a letter he sent to UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves in October, expressing concern over Perth being excluded from the initial £20 million funding allocated for Dundee and Arbroath in the Budget. The three projects at stake include the £3 million restoration of Perth’s Lower City Mills, a £1.5 million conversion of a former city foundry, and half a million pounds designated for a tourism centre on High Street.
In response to Wishart’s efforts, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Growth, Alex Norris MP, indicated that the funding for Perth might be withdrawn due to the government’s need to make budget cuts. This decision has been met with disappointment and criticism from Perth and Kinross Council leader Grant Laing, as well as opposition leaders within the council.
Wishart has now called on the Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, to intervene and secure the £5 million necessary for the projects to proceed. The Scotland Office is set to receive a funding increase, with a commitment to allocating £1.38 billion over the next decade for projects in Scotland. Wishart emphasised the importance of delivering these projects to promote the growth of Perth and enhance its appeal to tourists.
In light of these recent developments, Wishart criticised the handling of Perth’s Levelling Up funding as “utterly shambolic” and called for a resolution to ensure that Perth does not miss out on vital investment opportunities. The fate of these landmark projects hangs in the balance, pending a decision from the UK Government regarding the withdrawal of funding.
My Insight:
The challenge faced by Perth in securing funding for crucial development projects highlights the complexities and uncertainties associated with government funding schemes. The delay and potential withdrawal of funding not only jeopardise the progress of these projects but also raise questions about the government’s commitment to supporting growth outside major urban areas. It is essential for local representatives like Pete Wishart to advocate for their communities and ensure that valuable initiatives receive the necessary funding to thrive and contribute to local economic prosperity. Hopefully, a resolution will be reached to safeguard Perth’s future development opportunities.
