Police issue e-scooter warning over laws surrounding the popular Christmas gift

Police in Dumfries and Galloway have issued a warning regarding the laws surrounding e-scooters, just in time for the upcoming Christmas season. With e-scooters expected to be a popular gift choice this year, it’s essential for the public to be aware that it is illegal to ride privately owned e-scooters in public spaces. This includes roads, pavements, parks, and pedestrianised town centres. The only legal usage of e-scooters is on private land where permission from the landowner has been granted.
Castle Douglas Community Policing Constable Chloe Ellis emphasised that e-scooters are classified as personal light electric vehicles (PLEVs), which categorises them as motor vehicles. Therefore, e-scooters are subject to the same legal requirements as any other motor vehicle. This includes the need for insurance, a valid driving licence, and compliance with various construction and use regulations.
As the festive season approaches and the demand for e-scooters rises, it is crucial for individuals to understand and adhere to the laws regulating their use. By raising awareness of these regulations, the police aim to ensure the safety and compliance of e-scooter riders in Dumfries and Galloway.
In summary, as the popularity of e-scooters as gifts increases, it is important for both givers and receivers to be aware of the legal restrictions surrounding their use. By following the guidelines set out by the authorities, individuals can enjoy their e-scooters safely and responsibly during the holiday season and beyond.
