Posture expert warns only two ‘magic’ sleep positions should be used at night

Posture expert, James Leinhardt, founder of foam pillow and mattress brand Levitex, has issued a warning that only two ‘magic’ sleep positions should be used at night. According to him, stomach sleeping should be avoided for a healthy spine. He suggests that the optimal sleeping positions are known as “the soldier” and “the dreamer.” Leinhardt, with over a decade of experience in improving posture and quality of life for individuals with critical injuries and chronic illnesses, emphasises the importance of these two positions.

In a video posted on the brand’s TikTok page, James Leinhardt explains that the “soldier” position involves lying on your back in a straight position. This position ensures that the spine is well-supported by the mattress, with even distribution of body weight. Placing a pillow under the knees in this position can further enhance spine alignment by tilting the pelvis to provide more support.

The second recommended position is known as the “dreamer,” where one lies on their side. This position reportedly puts the least amount of tension on the spine. Leinhardt advises aligning the ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles while lying on your side. Placing a pillow between the knees and ankles can help reduce tension on the legs and offer better support to the spine.

These recommended sleeping positions, along with the use of pillows, not only promote spine health but can also improve air circulation, which is beneficial, especially in hot weather. Sleep expert Sammy Margo from Dreams has previously highlighted that side sleeping with a pillow between the legs can align the spine and allow for better airflow, which may be particularly beneficial for individuals with snoring issues or sleep apnoea.

Moreover, the back sleeper position with a pillow under the knees can aid in improving circulation, reducing leg fatigue and puffiness, and enhancing blood flow and heat dissipation. These tips from posture expert James Leinhardt can help individuals achieve a better night’s sleep while maintaining optimal spine health.

In conclusion, it is crucial to pay attention to your sleeping position as it can significantly impact your spine health and overall well-being. Following the advice of experts like James Leinhardt can lead to improved sleep quality and posture, ultimately contributing to a healthier lifestyle. Remember, a few simple adjustments in your sleep position can make a significant difference in how you feel during the day.
