Protesters gathered outside Scone Library campaigning to save it from closure

Over 200 protesters gathered outside Scone Library on Saturday, November 9, in a bid to save it from potential closure. The protesters were enthusiastic about preserving the library and its services for the community. Following the rally, the Scone and District Community Council held a meeting with Culture Perth and Kinross to discuss the proposed closure.
Due to increasing financial pressures, Culture Perth and Kinross is exploring alternative models for library services in the area. The organization, which manages libraries on behalf of Perth and Kinross Council, is looking into community-led provision, click-and-collect services, and enhanced mobile library activities as potential solutions to continue offering essential services.
The Save Scone Library campaign group is collaborating with similar groups in other areas like Comrie, Auchterarder, Birnam, and Alyth. Together, they are planning further actions, including protests and petitions addressed to Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to advocate for the preservation of local libraries.
Mid Scotland and Fife Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser recently highlighted the issue in the Scottish Parliament, expressing concerns about the possible closure of seven community libraries in Perth and Kinross due to budget cuts. Fraser emphasized the vital role libraries play as community hubs offering various activities, and he urged for solutions to ensure these libraries remain open for the benefit of the communities they serve.
The campaign to save Scone Library underscores the importance of libraries as essential community resources and hubs for learning, social interaction, and access to information. It highlights the unity and determination of local residents to protect valuable cultural institutions that enrich and empower their communities. Through advocacy and collective action, these demonstrators are striving to safeguard the future of their beloved library for generations to come.
