Rally opposing Scone library closure attended by around 100 people

Around 100 people gathered in Scone over the weekend to protest the potential closure of the town’s library. The rally was held in response to the uncertain future facing seven libraries in Perth and Kinross, including Scone, North Inch (Perth), Dunkeld, Alyth, Auchterarder, Comrie, and Coupar Angus. These libraries are under threat following a decision by Perth and Kinross Council to allocate funds towards exploring “local solutions for library services”.

Perthshire Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser and Green Perthshire MSP Mark Ruskell have both raised concerns about the closure of rural libraries, with Ruskell urging the council to protect these vital community resources. At the rally, attended by approximately 100 people, Ruskell called on local authorities to halt the closure plans and engage in meaningful consultations with the affected communities.

Ruskell highlighted the significant role libraries play in communities, beyond just book borrowing, and emphasised the long-lasting impact that closures would have. He criticised the council for expecting rural communities to take on additional responsibilities without adequate support or consultation. Ruskell stressed the importance of respectful dialogue and urged Culture Perth and Kinross to remove the immediate threat of closure from the table to facilitate constructive discussions about the libraries’ future.

In response, Culture Perth and Kinross expressed their commitment to exploring various options to maintain library services, including community-led models, click-and-collect services, and expanded mobile library activities. They acknowledged the financial challenges faced but pledged to work towards preserving access to library services across Perth and Kinross.

The fate of these libraries remains uncertain, but the community’s strong turnout at the rally demonstrates the significance of these cultural hubs in maintaining community connections and supporting vulnerable individuals.

**Insights and Summary:**

The rally in Scone to oppose the potential closure of the town’s library sheds light on the vital role libraries play beyond just lending books. It underscores the deep connection communities have with these spaces and the significant impact closures would have on both individuals and the community as a whole. The passionate response from MSPs and community members reflects the value placed on libraries as essential community resources that deserve protection and support. The ongoing dialogue between local authorities and residents highlights the importance of collaborative decision-making and ensuring that the voices of the community are heard in determining the future of these treasured institutions.
