Perth hospital radio station, CareSound Radio, has recently been honoured with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, a prestigious accolade that acknowledges the exceptional work of volunteer groups within their communities. CareSound Radio, also known as Hospital Radio Perth, has been broadcasting to Perth Royal Infirmary since 1989 and has since expanded its reach by including over 30 regional care homes in its programming.

The station, operated by 40 dedicated volunteers, is renowned for sourcing music requests and airing them during dedicated programmes 24 hours a day. CareSound Radio has been recognised as the UK Hospital Radio Station Of The Year on four occasions, showcasing their commitment to providing quality entertainment and support to those in hospitals and care homes.

John Watson, chairman of CareSound Radio, expressed his delight at receiving the prestigious award, attributing it to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers over the past 35 years. He extended his gratitude to individuals, businesses, funding bodies, and NHS Tayside for their support. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, CareSound Radio has not only overcome adversity but has also expanded its services to offer more support to hospital and care home residents in the region.

In addition to their regular broadcasts, CareSound Radio has provided commentary at every home St Johnstone game since 1990, a service that benefits elderly and sight-impaired fans by relaying the match updates throughout the stadium via radio.

Representatives from CareSound Radio will be presented with the King’s Award crystal and certificate by Stephen Leckie Esq, Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, later this year. Furthermore, two volunteers from the station will have the opportunity to attend a garden party at Holyrood House in July.
