Russian general and hundreds of North Korean troops ‘killed in Ukraine strike’

A significant strike in Ukraine is reported to have resulted in the deaths of a Russian general, hundreds of North Korean troops, and multiple Russian officers. The attack, carried out by a Ukrainian offensive missile strike using UK Storm Shadow missiles, is said to have killed 19 Russian soldiers, left 18 Russians and a North Korean general wounded, and caused devastation at a Putin command post and military facility. The strike, which occurred on November 20, is believed to have targeted an underground military facility in Maryino on a Tsarist estate in the Kursk region.
The incident marked the first known use of UK Storm Shadow missiles deep inside Russia and reportedly resulted in the death of Lt-Gen Valery Solodchuk. While Russian authorities have not confirmed the losses, the potential casualties are substantial for both Russia and North Korea. Reports suggest that Ukraine may have deployed the Storm Shadow missiles in Russia, which has elicited strong reactions from Moscow, including threats of nuclear retaliation and accusations of NATO involvement.
According to US-based Global Defense Corp, 500 North Korean soldiers were among the casualties, indicating the significant presence of North Korean troops supporting Putin’s forces in the conflict. The use of Storm Shadow missiles in Ukraine by Ukrainian forces has raised questions about the authorization of such munitions for operations outside Ukrainian territory. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated Ukraine’s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter in response to the reports.
The situation highlights the escalating tensions and international complexities of the conflict in Ukraine, with potential implications for global security and diplomatic relations. The evolving dynamics of the conflict underscore the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and address the humanitarian consequences of the ongoing crisis.
