A former nurse at Crosshouse Hospital, Tracey McCallum, has been suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for spreading conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 pandemic and vaccine. The NMC found that McCallum’s online posts, radio, and newspaper interviews had the potential to “undermine public confidence and trust” by creating fear and distrust.

McCallum, who worked for NHS 24 at the Ayrshire hospital, was also found to have breached confidentiality by sharing information about a patient’s health and a work colleague. The NMC determined that her fitness to practise was impaired due to misconduct. As a result, McCallum has been suspended for 12 months, with an interim suspension order in place for 18 months, pending a review after the initial 12-month period.

In her social media posts between March 2020 and December 2021, McCallum expressed scepticism towards tests and vaccines, referring to the pandemic as a ‘scamdemic’ and promoting unfounded conspiracy theories. She endorsed views suggesting masks are dangerous and claimed vaccines are unsafe. McCallum’s actions were deemed serious by the NMC as they contradicted recommended health practices and official advice, potentially putting the public at risk of harm.

Despite McCallum’s claims of exercising her freedom of speech, the NMC’s 46-page report highlighted the gravity of her actions amid a global health crisis.
