Scots couple have holiday ‘ruined’ as Spanish hotel bosses blame guests for bed bugs ‘plague’

A Scottish couple’s holiday has been described as “ruined” after Spanish hotel authorities have placed the blame on guests for a “plague” of bed bugs. Guests at the four-star Blue Sea Puerto Resort Hotel in Tenerife were left furious at the “disgusting” conditions, with reports of numerous people being bitten by the bugs. Sun-seekers, including a couple from Scotland, shared their ordeal at the hotel, located on the north coast of the island, where they encountered a large infestation of bed bugs.
Scott Mabon from Largs shared how his holiday with wife Jean-Marie was completely ruined by the bed bug bites on the first night of their two-week stay. The couple described feeling itchy and uncomfortable throughout their holiday, with Scott highlighting the hotel’s lack of action to address the issue. Despite the cleaners visiting the room regularly, the presence of bed bugs was not noticed, leading the couple to dispose of their suitcases upon returning home to prevent the infestation from spreading.
Several guests, including Aaron Coote and his partner Tanya Hadfield, also shared their distressing experiences of being bitten multiple times during their stay at the hotel. Additionally, Martin Ives and his wife Donna Schneider revealed that they had to move rooms multiple times due to the severity of the bed bug infestation, eventually demanding relocation to a different hotel.
While at least 25 guests have initiated legal action for compensation due to their holidays being marred by the bed bug infestation, the hotel management vehemently denied the presence of an infestation. Instead, they pointed fingers at guests for potentially bringing the bugs into the resort. Despite the ongoing issue being raised since January, bookings are still being accepted, with reports of continuing incidents of bed bugs in rooms.
Holidaymakers have expressed their dismay at the lack of action taken by the hotel to address the infestation, with calls for the authorities to intervene. The Holiday Claims Bureau highlighted the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the lasting impact of the bites on guests’ physical and mental health.
The Blue Sea Puerto Resort Hotel maintained that they are taking the bedbug issue seriously, attributing the problem to travelers from European countries who inadvertently brought the bugs with them. They assured guests of their commitment to strict hygiene protocols and efforts to resolve the issue promptly whenever bed bugs are identified in rooms.
In conclusion, the unfortunate experience of the Scottish couple and other guests at the Blue Sea Puerto Resort Hotel serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thorough hygiene and vigilance in hospitality establishments to ensure the well-being of travelers. It also underscores the necessity for hotel management to address such issues promptly to prevent guests from enduring distressing situations during their holidays.
