Scots Dr Who superfan finds new home for Dalek after model becomes local icon

A Doctor Who superfan in Scotland has found a new home for his beloved Dalek model, which had become a local icon in his town. Davie Kirkwood, 60, had purchased the replica Dalek 27 years ago, and it had been on display in his front window ever since. Standing at 5ft 7in, the cyborg had attracted over 500 people who visited Davie’s home to take pictures with it.

The Dalek had become a popular attraction in Dumfries, with multiple visitors stopping by daily to admire or photograph it. However, after retiring and deciding to downsize his sci-fi memorabilia collection, Davie felt it was time for someone else to enjoy the Dalek. Having received 35 offers to purchase it, Davie ultimately sold the Dalek for £1,250 to Nick Lindsay, chairman of the Clyne Heritage Society.

The Dalek will soon be relocated to Brora in the Scottish Highlands, where it will be part of a new heritage centre museum being established in a renovated school. Davie and Nick envision the Dalek as a fun photo opportunity for children and tourists visiting the museum. Davie, a Doctor Who fan for over 40 years, shared his excitement about the Dalek’s new role and the joy it would bring to visitors.

The Dalek, based on a 1970s design from the Tom Baker era, is one of only three made by English model maker Andy Shaw. In addition to its display, the Heritage Society plans to create a children’s book linking the Dalek to the town’s history, adding an interactive and educational element to its presence.

Proceeds from the sale of the Dalek will go to Parkinson’s UK in memory of Davie’s father, who battled Parkinson’s Disease. Davie expressed his satisfaction in knowing that the Dalek would continue to bring joy to others and highlighted the importance of its new role in the heritage centre museum. As he looks forward to focusing on his music collection and visiting the museum in Brora, Davie is eager to see the next generation enjoy the Dalek’s presence.

The story of Davie Kirkwood and his Dalek not only showcases a deep love for science fiction and memorabilia but also highlights the power of shared interests in bringing communities together. The Dalek’s transition from a local icon to a heritage centre exhibit demonstrates the impact of popular culture on local heritage and the value of preserving such symbols for future generations to enjoy.
