Scots Gran Sentenced to Jail for Hit-and-Run Incident Involving Car Ploughing into Man and Driving Off
A grandmother from Scotland has been sentenced to jail after a shocking hit-and-run incident, where she ploughed her car into a man and then sped off while he clung to the bonnet for over 500 yards. Karen Hayter, aged 50, was fleeing the scene of an accident in Dundee when she drove her Fiat Panda straight at Mark McIntyre, causing him multiple injuries.
The incident occurred after Hayter hit a parked car in Dundee’s Fairhurst Walk and tried to drive away. Mr McIntyre attempted to stop her, but she proceeded to accelerate with him on the bonnet. Eventually, he was thrown from the car onto the road. Sheriff Paul Brown sentenced Hayter to 14 months in jail and banned her from driving for over five years.
During the trial at Dundee Sheriff Court, CCTV footage captured the harrowing events as Mr McIntyre clung onto the bonnet while Hayter drove erratically. Despite Mr McIntyre’s efforts to stop her, Hayter continued to drive, showing no regard for his safety. Mr McIntyre suffered various injuries including cuts, abrasions, and a slipped disc from the incident.
Hayter claimed during the trial that she was “terrified” of Mr McIntyre, whom she did not know, and believed he might harm her. However, the jury found her guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, severe injury to Mr McIntyre, and failing to stop and report the accident. The guilty verdict left Mr McIntyre visibly emotional in the public gallery.
The court heard how Mr McIntyre’s actions were driven by a desire to prevent further harm and ensure the incident was reported. Despite Hayter’s claims of fear, her reckless driving and failure to stop and report the accident led to the severe consequences for Mr McIntyre.
In a case that highlights the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions, justice has been served as Hayter faces the consequences of her actions behind bars.
