Scots mum rages as bag with daughter’s lifesaving medication stolen by ‘bogus shopper’

A mother from Scotland is expressing her dismay after her two-year-old daughter’s backpack, which contained lifesaving medication, was stolen by a ‘bogus shopper’. The incident occurred at Poundstretcher on Gorgie Road in Edinburgh on Monday, December 9, around 11.30 am. Zoe Anderson inadvertently left the bag and her purse in the store, and a man reportedly took the bag from the shopkeeper, falsely claiming it belonged to his child, Edinburgh Live reports.
Zoe, deeply upset by the theft, described feeling “really angry” and “helpless” as the stolen bag contained medication crucial to managing her daughter’s nut allergy, which can lead to prolonged seizures lasting up to an hour. The backpack held controlled medication to halt seizures and antihistamines for allergic reactions. Zoe expressed concern that without the medication, she would be unable to assist her daughter until medical help arrived.
The situation intensified Zoe’s anxiety as her daughter has previously been in intensive care due to seizures. Zoe lamented, “When [the medications] were taken away from us, I felt completely helpless. I didn’t care about my purse or bag. Just felt helpless that lifesaving meds had been stolen.” Despite managing to procure emergency replacement medication, Zoe highlighted her frustration with Police Scotland’s response, feeling that the thief had adequate time to dispose of the bag before any follow-up was conducted.
In her plea for the return of the bag, Zoe also appealed for action to be taken against the perpetrator, emphasising the gravity of taking items without knowledge of their contents. A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that an investigation into the theft is ongoing, with Poundstretcher expressing regret over the incident and pledging cooperation with authorities.
The harrowing ordeal faced by Zoe and her daughter serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of access to lifesaving medication, especially in emergencies. The callous act of theft not only posed a direct threat to the child’s health but also inflicted emotional distress on the family. Such instances underscore the need for heightened awareness and vigilance in safeguarding essential medical supplies.
Zoe’s experience sheds light on the vulnerability faced by individuals reliant on specific medications and the profound impact of such thefts. Communities must rally together to support those in need and advocate for stricter measures to deter such callous acts. The resilience shown by Zoe in the face of adversity serves as a testament to a mother’s unwavering dedication to her child’s well-being and the enduring need for compassion and empathy in society.
