Scots pensioners are set to benefit from winter fuel payments ranging from £100 to £300 next year, as announced by the SNP Government. The decision, made by Social Justice Cabinet Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville, sees the abandonment of Labour’s means-testing plan in favour of a more universal approach. This move comes in response to Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to reduce eligibility for Winter Fuel Payments, causing 900,000 Scots to lose out on this crucial support.

Critics have deemed the Labour Government’s means-testing plan as heartless, particularly in light of increasing energy costs and the anticipated harsh winter ahead. The new Pension Age Winter Heating Payments system, to be implemented next year, will ensure that all pensioners receive financial assistance to help with heating their homes. Somerville stated, “The full details of our proposed approach will be set out in the Scottish Government’s 25-26 Budget.”

Under this new system, pensioners receiving qualifying benefits like Pension Credit will automatically receive payments of £200 or £300 next winter, based on their age. Additionally, universal payments of £100 will be introduced to all other pensioner households. This decision aims to provide essential support to all pensioners while safeguarding the income of those in receipt of means-tested benefits.

Somerville emphasised the Scottish Government’s commitment to upholding fairness, dignity, and respect for its citizens, especially older people. She highlighted that the Labour Government’s means-testing approach would have reduced Scotland’s funding by £147 million.
